Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ECU remapping, our mobile service, and what to expect.

General

Is ECU remapping safe? +

Yes. Professional ECU remapping is safe when carried out by experienced technicians using proven remap files. At Real Torque Performance, we only use calibrations that work within the safe mechanical limits of your engine.

How long does a remap take? +

A typical ECU remap takes approximately 1–2 hours from start to finish, including diagnostics, the remap itself, and post-remap testing.

Can my car be returned to stock? +

Absolutely. We always keep a copy of your original ECU file and can return your vehicle to its factory settings at any time.

What vehicles can you remap? +

We can remap most modern petrol and diesel vehicles including cars, vans, and commercial vehicles. Contact us with your vehicle details for confirmation.

Can you remap my van or commercial vehicle? +

Absolutely. We remap a wide range of vans and commercial vehicles including Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Volkswagen Transporter, Vauxhall Vivaro, and many more. Van remaps are popular for improving towing ability, fuel economy, and overall driveability.

Do you offer remaps for turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines? +

Yes, we remap both turbocharged and naturally aspirated engines. Turbocharged vehicles tend to see the largest gains from a remap, but naturally aspirated engines can also benefit from improved throttle response and smoother power delivery.

Can you remap a car that has already been remapped by someone else? +

Yes. We can read your current ECU file, assess the existing calibration, and either work from it or start fresh from the original factory file. If you have had a bad experience with a previous remap, we can put it right.

What is the difference between a remap and a tuning box? +

A tuning box is a plug-in device that intercepts sensor signals to trick the ECU into adding more fuel or boost. A proper ECU remap rewrites the software within the ECU itself, adjusting multiple parameters simultaneously for a far more refined, reliable, and safer result. We always recommend a proper remap over a tuning box.

Performance & Results

What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2? +

A Stage 1 remap works with your vehicle in its standard factory configuration and is the most popular option. Stage 2 builds on this with optimised settings designed for vehicles that already have hardware upgrades such as a sports exhaust, uprated intercooler, or high-flow air filter.

Do you offer Stage 2 remaps? +

Yes, we offer both Stage 1 and Stage 2 remaps. Stage 2 is designed for vehicles with supporting hardware modifications such as a performance exhaust or uprated intercooler.

How much power can I expect to gain? +

Power gains vary depending on your vehicle, engine type, and the stage of remap chosen. As a rough guide, a Stage 1 diesel remap typically delivers 20–35% more power and torque, while petrol vehicles usually see gains of 10–20%. We can provide estimated gains for your specific vehicle on request.

Will a remap improve my fuel economy? +

Yes, in many cases. An economy remap optimises fuelling and injection timing to help your engine run more efficiently. Many of our customers report savings of 10–15% on fuel costs, especially on diesel vehicles used for motorway driving.

Can remapping help with flat spots or turbo lag? +

Yes. One of the most noticeable benefits of a remap is improved throttle response and reduced turbo lag. By optimising boost pressure curves and fuelling maps, we can eliminate flat spots and deliver smoother, more progressive power delivery throughout the rev range.

Will a remap put extra strain on my engine? +

A professionally developed remap works within the safe tolerances of your engine and drivetrain. Manufacturers often build in a significant safety margin, and a well-calibrated remap simply makes better use of that headroom without pushing components beyond their limits.

Is there any downtime after a remap? +

No. Once the remap is complete and we have carried out our post-remap checks, you can drive your vehicle away immediately. There is no bedding-in period required.

Is ECU remapping legal in the UK? +

Yes, ECU remapping is completely legal in the UK. There are no laws preventing you from having your vehicle remapped. However, you must declare the modification to your insurance provider as it is considered a vehicle modification.

Will remapping affect my insurance? +

ECU remapping is classed as a vehicle modification and should be declared to your insurance provider. Many specialist insurance companies offer competitive policies for remapped vehicles.

Will remapping void my manufacturer warranty? +

A remap may affect your manufacturer warranty on engine and drivetrain components. If your vehicle is still under warranty, we recommend checking with your dealer before proceeding. We are always happy to discuss this with you so you can make an informed decision.

Will my car pass its MOT after a remap? +

A Stage 1 remap should not affect your vehicle's ability to pass an MOT. The MOT emissions test measures tailpipe output, and a properly calibrated remap keeps emissions within acceptable levels. DPF, EGR, or AdBlue modifications on road vehicles may cause an MOT failure.

Can I still get my car serviced at the dealer after a remap? +

Yes. A quality ECU remap should not prevent routine servicing at a main dealer. However, it is worth noting that some dealers may detect modifications during software updates. We can advise you on this before proceeding.

DPF, EGR & AdBlue

What is a DPF delete and is it legal? +

A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) delete involves removing the DPF from the exhaust system. It is important to note that removing a DPF is illegal for road-use vehicles in the UK and will result in an MOT failure. We offer DPF solutions for off-road and competition vehicles only.

Can you fix a blocked DPF? +

In many cases, yes. We can perform a forced DPF regeneration using diagnostic tools, which burns off the accumulated soot and restores normal operation. This is a legal and effective solution that avoids the cost of DPF replacement.

What is an EGR valve and can it be remapped? +

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve redirects a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce emissions. Over time, it can become clogged and cause running issues. We can remap the EGR system on off-road and competition vehicles. For road vehicles, we can advise on the best course of action.

Do you offer AdBlue solutions? +

Yes. We can diagnose and resolve AdBlue system faults using our diagnostic equipment. For off-road and competition vehicles, we can also offer AdBlue system remaps. All road vehicle work is carried out in compliance with UK emissions regulations.
